His journey into Homoeopathy began with a deeply personal experience. As a young student, he witnessed the recovery of his mother from long-standing asthma through Homoeopathic treatment when other medical approaches had failed to provide lasting relief. This event profoundly influenced his life and inspired his decision to dedicate himself to the study and practice of Homoeopathy in service of suffering humanity.
Dr. Shanthakumar pursued extensive academic and professional training in the field of medicine and healthcare management. He holds qualifications in Homoeopathic Medicine and Surgery, a Doctorate in Alternative Medicine, an MBA in Healthcare and Hospital Management, and a PhD in Scientific Homoeopathy. In pursuit of deeper mastery of classical Homoeopathy, he underwent advanced training at the International Academy of Classical Homoeopathy under the internationally respected teacher George Vithoulkas, becoming the only Sri Lankan Homoeopath to receive this specialized training.
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Shanthakumar has worked actively to expand access to Homoeopathic healthcare. He introduced Homoeopathic services to plantation communities, establishing charitable clinics and conducting training programs for pharmacists and healthcare workers. He has also operated special clinics for individuals struggling with drug and alcohol dependence and has helped many patients recover through individualized Homoeopathic treatment.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Shanthakumar has contributed significantly to professional education and institutional development. He has served in regulatory and professional organizations, participated in curriculum development initiatives, and provided training to Homoeopathic practitioners. For more than fifteen years he has also served as a Visiting Consultant in Homoeopathy at medical institutions in India, helping to develop Homoeopathic departments within large multidisciplinary hospitals.
A defining aspect of Dr. Shanthakumar's professional life has been his intellectual quest to understand the scientific foundations of Homoeopathy. Recognizing that India is one of the world's major centers of Homoeopathic practice, he travelled extensively throughout the country, visiting nearly every state and participating in numerous scientific seminars and professional conferences. Despite these engagements, he observed that many of the fundamental scientific questions regarding the mechanism of Homoeopathic medicines remained unanswered.
Driven by this curiosity, he extended his search internationally, meeting Homoeopaths, researchers, and scholars across the world. These encounters convinced him that while Homoeopathy had a rich clinical tradition, its deeper scientific interpretation remained an open frontier.
This realization led him to pursue a new intellectual path: developing scientific perspectives on Homoeopathy by engaging with modern advances in molecular science, bio-information systems, and regulatory biology. During this important phase of his work, he met a powerful co-thinker, Chandran K.C., whose collaborative discussions helped sharpen his analytical approach and further develop his scientific thinking.
Today, his work focuses on integrating the principles first articulated by Samuel Hahnemann with modern scientific insights. A central theme of his research is the emerging concept of the "drugless drug" - a therapeutic approach in which highly refined medicinal signals stimulate the body's intrinsic healing intelligence without imposing chemical burden.
Dr. Shanthakumar continues to lecture internationally, participate in scientific dialogue, and contribute to the development of new perspectives in Homoeopathic medicine. His long-term vision is to help establish Homoeopathy as a scientifically recognized branch of modern molecular and bio-informational medicine, contributing to a safer, more individualized, and more humane future for global healthcare.
